Writing a medieval/fantasy story and am having trouble with description. Help?

Author: admin  //  Category: Compare coffee grinders

I use a lot of "flowery" language. (similes and metaphors)
When I do something in a modern story, I can easily use "the sound of a lawnmower." "the color of pizza sauce." "the smell of a coffee grinder."
But I am writing a medieval/fantasy story, and my description is kind of repetitive. I’m not sure how certain things would compare to something in a medieval/fantasy story. I’m getting sick of "watery" blues, "grass" green eyes, and flower-colored dresses. Also sick of "the sound of books clattering" "sound of a cough" etc.
Help please?

Especially:
White
Green
Orange
Pink
Red
A banging on a door
Rusty hinges
Water in a fountain

I understand your frustration completely. I, too, love writing in fantasy realms wherein I can’t use modern day comparisons. My suggestion is using an online thesaurus (I love thesaurus.com). I prefer the online versions because you can continue to click on words until you find the perfect one. I’ve been saved a number of times by the suggestions the thesaurus has given me. Just one word of warning, be careful of overusing it. Some people tend to go wild, replacing words with others that aren’t commonly used - you don’t want your reader to have to drag out a thesaurus every time they come across a word they don’t understand. Good luck!
